The question “What is my work today?” had been coming to me over a number of months. As I prayed to understand more clearly what my work was and how to do it well, my volunteer work in a Christian Science Reading Room helped me find an answer.
I had only recently commenced working in this Reading Room when a fellow came in who was clearly under the influence of alcohol and accustomed to living rough on the streets. He was familiar with the Reading Room and wanted to use our bathroom. When I said there were public facilities just a short distance up the street, he became agitated and pushed past me to go out the back to where the bathroom was located.
He was out there for some time, which gave me the opportunity to turn my thought to God to see His government of this situation. When the fellow came back in, he had an intimidating stocking mask pulled over his face obscuring his facial features. At first I was taken aback, but then I heard myself saying, “That’s an interesting mask, but it isn’t the real you.” He laughed and pushed the mask back under his knit cap. The aggressive behavior ceased, we spoke a little more, and he left waving goodbye.
