Finding more than a lost wallet

From the August 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I’m very grateful for a moment of spiritual growth I had that proved the value of stepping into the “closet” to pray, as Jesus described, to plead God’s allness in every situation. It also showed that often a lost-and-found item brings with it the gift of expanded divine understanding.

A few years ago I was in my senior year of college. After each class I would walk back to my dorm room across campus. I kept a key card in my wallet which allowed me access through the front door of the building. But one day on my walk back, I realized I didn’t have my wallet.

A friend let me in the front door, and I searched my room but had no success finding the key card. Briefly I turned to God, asking Him for guidance on where to go next. In my impatience, I reasoned that the logical place seemed to be the classroom I had been in beforehand. I returned to the empty classroom, but it wasn’t there. What I knew to do from Christian Science really kicked in at that point, as I had no further idea of where the wallet could be.
