Paths to Christian Science Nursing

Mary and Martha: Their relevance to Christian Science nursing

From the August 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Originally published in German

In Luke 10, we read about Lazarus’ two sisters—Mary and Martha. Martha has invited Jesus into her home, and she is “cumbered about much serving,” as the Bible describes (verse 40). Assumed to be the oldest of the three siblings, she was likely used to taking responsibility for her family, and as a woman at that time, her days would have been filled with household tasks. Accustomed to being busy, she continues doing practical tasks, even when Christ Jesus is in her home.

Mary, on the other hand, sits at Jesus’ feet listening to his teachings. When Martha complains to Jesus that her sister is not helping, he replies: “Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her” (verses 41, 42). Elsewhere the Bible explains that “Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus” (John 11:5). And Jesus didn’t condemn Martha for her serving. But he did point out that only one thing was actually needed—listening to and following Christ, Truth.

It’s not just human effort that is needed. This work is built on a foundation of spiritual understanding and healing prayer.
