Mountains and Reading Rooms

From the August 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you ever wished you could be moved by God in a special way? You might try mountain climbing or . . . a Christian Science Reading Room. You read that right. Both have worked for me.

I am well aware that Reading Rooms have sometimes been misunderstood and outright made fun of as out of date or irrelevant. However, I think critics sometimes don’t really give what they are criticizing a fair try. Have you heard someone say they thought they did not like a certain food (like a French cheese or mushrooms), but then after giving it an honest try they really liked it?

Well, I’ve tried both mountain climbing and Reading Rooms. Exploring both has met my need for inspiration and fulfillment. Mountains are easy for me to understand because nature is at its best, embracing you as you hike along. A Reading Room can embrace you, too.
