When our dog sustained an injury to her paw while she was being boarded, I was at first quite unhappy that this had happened. She loves to run, and the wound was so big that running and playing seemed impossible for some time to come.
I realized very quickly that any anger on my part wasn’t going to help our dog, so I started looking for a way to support her healing while also keeping her wounded paw clean and dry. This made me think of how Christian Science nurses deal with people in need of practical care for injuries or other physical problems.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Founder of Christian Science, provided for the availability of specially trained Christian Science nurses. They take care of the physical needs of patients while supporting the metaphysical treatment provided by Christian Science practitioners. Mrs. Eddy says in particular: “The nurse should be cheerful, orderly, punctual, patient, full of faith,—receptive to Truth and Love.” We find this quote on page 395 of her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and the mention of Truth and Love refers to God.
