“Get humble”

From the August 2026 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Years ago, I was hired by a large company to replace a retiring employee, who stayed on for several weeks to train me in this new position. I was very grateful for this training, as there was quite a learning curve. Shortly after she left, however, the office went through many structural changes, and I found myself suddenly working for several different departments as a “fill in.” The department that put me on their payroll had a director who rarely came to our local office and so was unaware of the workload I was handling.

It soon seemed that this person did not trust me, as she started questioning my reason for clocking overtime. Also, the manager under her in our office became hostile toward me. As an experienced worker with high values, I found myself becoming quite indignant at the way I was being treated.

As my attitude changed, I felt as if a huge burden had been lifted from my shoulders.
