Love is the only law

From the August 2026 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Scriptures inform us that God is Love. In Christian Science we learn that God is also Principle. Therefore, we conclude in Science that Love is Principle. Accepting the mathematical exactness of this logic, we may also conclude that Love, God, is never not Principle. Love cannot exist except as Principle—as the supreme and universal creator of law.

It is not difficult to find scriptural authority for these logical conclusions. God manifested Himself to Moses as the Lawgiver. The Ten Commandments, which God gave to the children of Israel through Moses, were not theoretical. They were not abstract nor beyond the common man’s ability to comprehend and obey. On the contrary, they were eminently practical then and are today.

Christ Jesus’ experience serves as another clear scriptural example of Love manifesting itself as Principle, and Principle manifesting itself as Love. The Beatitudes in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount are examples of divine law. They are consistent with Jesus’ understanding of God as the Principle that can never act except as Love. Jesus proved this law of Love throughout his ministry. It was evident in his compassionate treatment of the woman taken in adultery, in his feeding the multitudes when so little food was available, in his healing the man with the withered hand on the Sabbath, to name a few examples.
