Beholding the government of God

From the August 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

“Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all” (I Chronicles 29:11, 12). This was King David’s prayer as he transferred power to his son Solomon, and it set a high standard for the government of a nation. It made the law of God, divine Principle, the basis of Solomon’s reign, not the wealth, privilege, and status that he would inherit.

How can we pray more effectually in order to behold the government of God, no matter where we live?

Christ Jesus teaches, through the Lord’s Prayer, that God’s kingdom is meant to be on earth, as it is in heaven. A people’s true idea of God and worship is key to seeing God’s government more fully expressed, so it’s vital that our understanding of God be spiritualized and strengthened and that our prayers be pure and consistent. These words of Isaiah—“For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us” (33:22)—point to God’s supremacy and guidance in the judicial, legislative, and executive functions of any government, with no mention of party or personality.
