The healing prism of Christian Science class instruction

From the July 2019 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Even though I grew up attending a Christian Science Sunday School and was active in the Christian Science organization at my college, I never knew very much about Primary class instruction in Christian Science. I just knew it was a course conducted by a Christian Science teacher, an experienced Christian Science practitioner who has taken a course on teaching Christian Science, and it generally lasts about two weeks. I also had a faint impression—which turned out to be false—that the class was only for experienced Christian Scientists. I wasn’t even sure what the course was actually about.

Then, during my senior year in college, our Christian Science organization sponsored a series of talks in which Christian Scientists came and shared how Christian Science played a role in their lives. Among them was a Christian Science teacher. His talk sparked an interest in something deeper that I wanted to know more about. Later I called him to ask more questions, and soon I made a four-hour drive to visit him and continue the conversation.

Among many things we talked about was the value of Primary class instruction in learning the fundamental spiritual truths that enable a person to heal by giving Christian Science treatment. We also discussed how age has nothing to do with being ready to take class, because what is most important is a humble, willing desire to learn more about healing through prayer.
