Study the letter—but why?

From the December 2021 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There is no end to learning, said the composer Robert Schumann. This is so true, everywhere, at all times, especially when we look at the timeless, holy art of healing. What an infinite world to explore! As with every field in life, you can embrace this most precious of all arts by study. The Science of being, Christian Science, heals both mind and body, and is drawn from the Bible. Isn’t it the inspired Word of the Bible that we really yearn to understand and live out in our lives? Isn’t this alone a great incentive for study?

This Word is not just found in black and white as words on a paper or screen: It is found everywhere in creation and the universe—the emanation of divine Mind itself. This Word is purely spiritual and has therefore infinite ways to express itself. It is the Word alone that conveys the healing and saving power and infuses our thought with the Christ-spirit that alone heals. It is also this beautiful and infinitely wise Word that lights up the words on the page with spiritual understanding. This understanding doesn’t come from reading or studying words alone: It is the humble and conscientious acceptance and application of the Word which puts head and heart into perfect synchronicity. Mary Baker Eddy counsels in the Christian Science textbook: “Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 495).
