Many parents today provide their children with spiritual education, trusting that they will benefit from it. According to psychologist Lisa Miller, Ph.D., in raising children, “[T]he single most crucial ingredient of all, the only thing that science has shown to reliably predict fulfillment, success, and thriving,” is “a child’s spiritual development” (The Spiritual Child, p. 24).
The Christian Science Sunday School is a place that nurtures children’s innate spirituality, helping them find divine protection, peace, and care from knowing the Supreme Being we call God. Here, by being taught the Scriptures and their spiritual interpretation, children gain an understanding of who they are as children of God, divine Spirit. The Christian Science Sunday School is designed to teach children about their true spiritual and moral nature, and prepare them to effectively follow Jesus’ example and practice Christian Science in their everyday lives. It teaches them how they can heal, be healed, and live their innate sinlessness.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, who dearly loved children and established the Christian Science Sunday School, plainly tells us of the importance and results of spiritual education for our children. She writes, “The entire education of children should be such as to form habits of obedience to the moral and spiritual law, with which the child can meet and master the belief in so-called physical laws, a belief which breeds disease” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 62).
