As someone daily striving to follow the master Christian, Christ Jesus, I am very grateful for the Holy Bible and the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Described by Mrs. Eddy as the “dual and impersonal pastor” of The Church of Christ, Scientist (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 322), these works show how Christ Jesus healed by understanding God, Love, as our only creator.
Last summer I was housesitting at my sister’s ranch while she was on vacation, and I needed to feed her animals as well as exercise her dogs. One afternoon, while I was preparing the dogs’ meal, I tried to pull open what I thought was a drawer, but it didn’t open easily. I pulled harder on what turned out to be a merely decorative heavy piece of wood, and it fell down squarely on the toes of my bare left foot.
After the initial shock, the pain was intense, but I immediately refused to entertain any thought of bone breakage or possible immobility. I knew that I could turn quickly and confidently to ideas from the dual pastor featured in the weekly Bible Lesson of the Christian Science Quarterly, which I had studied that morning. The subject of the Lesson was “Love,” a synonym for God. This Bible verse from my study immediately came to thought: “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them” (Psalms 119:165).
