" He who gains self-knowledge, self-control, and the kingdom of heaven within himself, within his own consciousness, is saved through Christ, Truth. " These words of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, found on page 161 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" are a call to arms.

The small son of friends of mine was once bitterly disappointed on finding upon his first trip to Canada that it was not purple! His only knowledge of Canada had been a purple map which someone had shown him and said, "This is Canada. " Until he learned differently, Canada had been a land of purple grass, purple trees, and purple sky.

Students of Christian Science find through their study of the Bible and Science and Health by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, that this Science, when correctly applied, delivers them from every ill or problem "that flesh is heir to.

To the community in which it is given, a Christian Science lecture brings a message of hope and healing, for its purpose is spiritually to uplift and enlighten human consciousness and to awaken thought to a better understanding of God and of man and the universe as His perfect creation. A lecture explains the practical value of Christian Science when applied to problems of whatever nature and proclaims the actuality of good, which counteracts the fables of material sense and destroys them.

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul spoke of those "having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof" (II Tim. 3:5).

Within the last century mechanical and electrical devices have revolutionized mankind's way of living. It is evident to students of Christian Science that these developments have resulted from the liberation of thought due largely to the great discovery of this fundamental Science of Mind.

As the world becomes progressively smaller, we inevitably become more conscious of our fellowmen. Mortal mind, through its inherent perverseness, often seems to dwell on the differences in mankind, no matter how inconsequential.

Some hidden methods of influencing thought and stimulating action are now being brought to the attention of the public by the press. These include experiments in subliminal projection, an advertising medium designed to influence individuals unconsciously and thus persuade them to purchase certain products.

In Old Testament times, fasts were periods set apart to express national humiliation and to supplicate the divine favor. There were also numerous instances of individual fasting under the influence of grief, anxiety, or repentance.

Today there are influences actively working to explain away the resurrection of Christ Jesus as myth, metaphor, or as anything less than the plain fact, recorded in the Gospels, of physical resurrection. These influences come from materialistic political or economic systems, from overextended natural sciences, and even from thoughtful and deeply concerned Christian theologians.
