The names and claims of diseases have become so elaborate in these times that the very hearing of them frequently instills fear in the hearts of mankind. Christian Science teaches that "Spirit names and blesses all" (Science and Health by Mrs.
" Matrimony , which was once a fixed fact among us, must lose its present slippery footing, and man must find permanence and peace in a more spiritual adherence. " So writes Mrs.
" I Will sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea" ( Ex. 15:1 ).
Every student of Christian Science who applies its teachings to the solution of human problems is practicing this Science. Those Christian Scientists who devote all their time to the healing work are designated as Christian Science practitioners.
In the forty-fourth and forty-fifth chapters of the Book of Isaiah are eloquent protests against idolatry and its folly. Again and again Isaiah calls upon the people to resist the temptation to worship idols, or false gods, that could be seen and touched.
Christian Science shows that prayer is a reaching out of the heart toward a better sense of existence, one free from all uneasiness, and that it can also fulfill this desire of the heart, thanks to the power which puts prayer into action. What is this power, and where does it come from? Jesus exercised it better than anyone else.
Jesus knew that his kingdom was not of this world. He said ( Luke 17:21 ), "The kingdom of God is within you"; in other words, it is attainable in proportion to one's understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him.
Why do Christian Scientists express their gratitude to God for the life-work of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science? Because they have been so greatly blessed by her teachings. Their gratitude is not one of personal adulation.
Under the marginal heading "Spiritualized consciousness" on page 14 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy declares: "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,— neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints.
It would be impossible for anyone to estimate the influence of prayer on the lives of men. History records many forms of prayer; but it has not recorded, and never can record, the comfort, peace, and inspiration that the individual has gained through his prayers—audible, silent, or unexpressed.
