I lead a Bible study group at a local jail in Boston, and the men I talk with use and love a diversity of Bible translations. However, I often hear that many of these men find the words of the King James Version hard to understand or relate to.

Health care in Africa in the early days of the 20th century, at a time when the influence of the missionaries to Africa was not widespread, had a definite dimension to it that was not physical. The doctors or herbalists of those days believed that symptoms of ill health were attributable, in some way, to the patient’s way of life, or their way of thinking—enmity, an unresolved quarrel, lingering hatred, unforgiveness, a sinful nature, or some mysterious incident in the past.

The healings of Jesus have uplifted hope for over 2,000 years. I have been a Journal subscriber for years but have been remiss in telling you of the gratitude I feel for the work you all do to produce and share such a treasure to bless the world. However, an article in the February Journal by Rosalie Dunbar, “  ‘To lighten mankind’ ,” has prompted me to write this note.

During Mary Baker Eddy’s   lifetime, Bible Lesson Committees were given the freedom to compile lessons in whatever way they felt best communicated the spiritual ideas that constituted each lesson. However, in the years after her passing, various guidelines were developed that narrowed their options.

The Glossary in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy is one of my favorite chapters in the whole book. Studying the Glossary, which defines key biblical terms in their metaphysical meaning, naturally opens thought to a more expansive view of the world around us.

For many years, I’d incorrectly thought of my practice of Christian Science as a kind of “machine” that I could turn on to crank out healings. I believed that if I read enough about Christian Science or prayed hard enough, my problems would be solved.

As avid hikers know, bushwhacking means making your way through thick woods without a trail. It’s tough going.
