"The crown of rejoicing"

A vintage Hollywood movie shows a conquering hero driving his chariot through the streets of ancient Rome, reveling in the deafening cheers of the populace. At his side is a servant, who holds a crown of laurel leaves above his head, repeatedly reminding him, "You are only mortal!" Like the servant in the chariot, many schools of human knowledge repeatedly proclaim that we are only struggling, suffering mortals—whose victories are short-lived.

What does it take to heal?

When I first entered the public practice of Christian healing as a Christian Science practitioner, many people asked me what kind of training I had in order to enter this work. They wanted to know if I had a theological degree, an education in Biblical history, or if I had taken a sociological or even psychological course of study.

Toward the end of last year, the Christian Science Committee on Publication for Illinois participated in a three-day American Academy of Family Physicians Scientific Assembly at McCormick Place in Chicago. There was a record attendance of almost 20,000.

Balance is sought by more than the circus tightrope walker. We're all more at ease when we strike a comfortable balance between employment and family demands, between lightheartedness and seriousness, between income and expenditure, and so on.

Looking at balance from a spiritual perspective

For some years my wife and I lived in a lovely wooded area, and near our driveway were two slender pine trees. One winter we had a heavy, wet snowfall, and under the load of snow both trees bent low to the ground.
