As we approach the Christmas holiday season, do we feel a deep quietness and joy? Or are we caught up in the shopping and social activities that too often dominate this season? Do we find ourselves counteracting the commotion or contributing to it? Are we experiencing holy days or hectic days? In the home of a friend of mine, extensive preparations were being made for a large family gathering on Christmas Day, and the little preschooler in the family had been told of the many relatives who would be coming. On Christmas Eve the mother, following an ancient custom, placed a candle in the window, telling the little fellow she was doing this to light the way for the baby Jesus.

Outside my office window high above a bustling city, I regularly see a helicopter weaving back and forth. Using his radio and from his overhead position, the pilot can recommend to drivers how to unsnarl traffic and to avoid jams.

Is it presumptuous for us to say that man is immortal and to claim that to be true of our own identity? Anything that is actually true of man in Christian Science is true of individuals and therefore practical in our experience. Unless we state the truth accurately we're not applying the Science of being as we should.

"How would a Christian Scientist feel about the handicapped?" my friend asked. She had just finished working at a summer camp for the physically and mentally handicapped, and we were spending a few days together before school started.

A chemist can add a dash of one chemical to a mixture and spark so basic a reaction that it transforms the original into something new and useful. When yeast is added to dough, a chemical and biological reaction starts, which, under a microscope, looks like a fierce and terrible war.

At one point in his teaching, when he was challenged by the scribes, Jesus stated, "No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. "   Mark 3:27; "The strong man" has frequently been identified as Satan, the devil.

What does a Christian Science nurse do? The question has frequently been asked of me, and about half those asking have been Christian Scientists. So I thought I'd like to answer this question in an article—beginning at the beginning.

The purpose of every child, no matter how socially and economically deprived he seems to mortal view, is to glorify God. As we let the Christ reveal the man of God's making to us, we will find appropriate ways of helping the underprivileged.
