Many years ago, when I first became a student of Christian Science, I spent many hours studying the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, listening for God’s guidance. Once as I was deep in study, though, I felt suddenly unwell.
“Somewhere, sometime, somehow, I will learn to be more Christlike. ” That was always my deepest wish over the years as I grew up in Christian Science.
As a young mother, I often turned to a local Christian Science practitioner for help. We called her “Grandma Helen” because she was like family.
The words we choose when praying might be significant. Silent words can indicate our heart’s desire.
Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures asks, then answers: “What is the scientific statement of being?” ( p. 468 ).
Almost every time I drive by our local schools, I ask God for inspiration on praying for their students and staff. Sometimes I take one synonym for God and think about the qualities that especially relate and how they are present for everyone in the school.

One day while walking through my town, this thought came to mind: “You need an office!” What a grand idea, and how lovely to have an office specifically designated for the Christian Science practice. For a few days I ruminated on the idea, and I began looking at spaces downtown.
When you’ve experienced healing in Christian Science, the joy, uplift, and gratitude you feel stays with you, and you naturally want to share it. The Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and The Herald of Christian Science provide a place for everyone to do so.
Years ago as a college student, I joined a large branch Church of Christ, Scientist—my very first. I remember one lady telling me, as if confiding a joyful secret, that it’s in a branch church that one really begins to grow spiritually.
