A COMMERCIAL I'VE SEEN A FEW TIMES ON TV RECENTLY SHOWS a series of tiny vignettes: A pedestrian steps off the curb, unwittingly in danger, and the stranger next to him pulls him to safety. Several more incidents follow where strangers help other strangers in small and sometimes tender ways.

2008! Really? Wow. Doesn't seem possible, right? Yet, as we say goodbye to 2007, we find ourselves with another year rolling out before us.

WHAT DO YOU SAY WE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS ON JULY 8 NEXT YEAR? Or, how about October 21? Or May 11? Sound bizarre? Thought of purely in terms of Christmas as December 25—something most of the Christian world has been attuned to for centuries—it certainly does! But, of course, Christmas is more than tinsel, trees, and gift-giving. It's more than a cozy time for family and friends to gather and spread good cheer.
