SQUARE ONE

From the November 2008 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THIS MONTH, WE RECOGNIZE THE NOTABLE MILESTONE OF OUR sister publication The Christian Science Monitor, which reaches its 100th year of publication. Add the fact that this newspaper was started by a woman, Mary Baker Eddy, and the milestone is unparalleled. While other woman over time have started newspapers, those papers ceased operations well before their 100th year. As the Monitor launches into its second century, it is energetically taking steps to expand its reach by print, e-mail, and Web and had begun on a pathway to become financially sustainable.

In this issue, as we honor the Monitor's journey, researcher Judy Huenneke explores the Monitor's beginnings and the factors that have compelled its editors to keep it abreast of the times. A roundtable discussion with top staff editors explores their metaphysical approach to fulfilling the Monitor's mission. And dispatches from several church members discuss what the Monitor means to individuals who support its mandate bless all humanity.

In addition to the Journal's focus on the Monitor, the newspaper will be featured in the November 24 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel, and an audio chat with Editor John Yemma and Managing Editor Marshall Ingwerson is posted on spirituality.com.
