About three years ago, my parents gave me a call with some very grave news: Their house was about to be flooded. They told me that they were praying diligently and had enlisted the support of a Christian Science practitioner, and that my sister was also praying about this issue.

One day I was hanging out with a friend from work, and we were having a great time talking about our lives. I felt the conversation was going super well—that I was really connecting with her emotionally and we were coming to a better understanding of each other’s life experiences.

Every summer in arid places and increasingly in other places all over the world, fire season is a dreaded time of concern and heightened fear for residents and firefighters alike. My family lives in an area often afflicted by fires.

Integral to the practice of Christian Science is the expectation that prayer will result in our practical human needs being met in tangible ways. This prayer is based on knowing one all-powerful God, Spirit, and man in His image and likeness.

I first began studying Christian Science as a teenager. When I learned that one can take a course of instruction in this Science, I assumed it was only for older people who had already reached an advanced level of understanding, and that following the class, they would pretty much know everything there is to know about Christian Science.

“Everlasting Punishment. All are welcome.

“Give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people” ( Isaiah 51:4 ). For virtually everything we do, there are standards we depend on that can’t be compromised.

Many people feel that their day-to-day lives are completely outside the range of God’s ability to care for them. The conventional view of life as material tends to reinforce this outlook and the fear it can engender.

My friend and I enjoy running together and had an opportunity to run a half-marathon. While we had never tried running such a distance and didn’t have a runner’s training plan, the one thing we did have was some understanding of Christian Science.
