Reading the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, for the first time, I wanted to know what this Science of the Christ required of me, an earnest seeker. I hadn’t read far when I came to this: “First in the list of Christian duties, he [Jesus] taught his followers the healing power of Truth and Love” (p. 31).
I perked up and read it again. And a third time. “Hey, wait a minute,” I said to myself. The “he taught his followers the healing power of Truth and Love” sounded to me like a teaching, explaining a fact. But where’s the duty?
Ever since then I’ve pondered that first Christian duty. What I’ve discovered is the more I grow in my understanding of and love for God, the more this “duty” means and includes.
