Go ahead, ‘give a cup of cold water’

From the February 2020 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I love how the author of the inspiring book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, frames the spiritual foundation and practice of Christian Science with this statement: “A higher and more practical Christianity, demonstrating justice and meeting the needs of mortals in sickness and in health, stands at the door of this age, knocking for admission. Will you open or close the door upon this angel visitant, who cometh in the quiet of meekness, as he came of old to the patriarch at noonday?” (p. 224).

A few months ago, I traveled to Boston for a weeklong work conference. As I boarded the plane, I was feeling a bit out of sorts and was one of the last to board because of my seat assignment. As I squeezed my way into the last seat on the overcrowded plane, I started to get bombarded by negative thoughts, fears, and discomfort. To make matters worse, I had forgotten to bring anything to read to keep me occupied. I began shuffling through the seat-back pocket, fully expecting to find the typical entertainment magazines and safety instructions, but to my amazement, I found a copy of the latest Journal. The magazine opened to an article entitled “There just has to be more!” (Mark Swinney, August 2019). This was just what I needed at just the right time, as it turned my thought and focus spiritually upward toward God.

Almost instantaneously, I began to recognize and appreciate all the good around me. The change in my consciousness revealed true harmony. The two individuals seated to my left and right both proved to be extremely kind and joyous, and the rest of the flight was comfortable. This set the tone for a week of learning and professional growth at my work conference.
