Of Good Report

People who attended last year’s Annual Meeting, or subsequent meetings the Board of Directors have been holding in various global locations, responded with many heartfelt messages telling about the “newness of life” they were feeling as they glimpsed and lived the reality of Spirit more deeply. The Journal is glad to share some of these messages here, and encourages others to send in their own responses.

It’s a great privilege, when appropriate, to share Christian Science with others—such as welcoming our neighbors’ children to our Sunday Schools, inviting newcomers to Christian Science lectures or church services, or sharing Christian Science literature. Many years ago, when I was a high school student in South Korea and just a beginner in the study of Christian Science, I mistakenly thought that I could not help others unless I had been through Primary class instruction in Christian Science and had decades of studying the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy’s writings under my belt.

Members of my Christian Science Society in Chandigarh, India, were praying for our community in response to news of people under the attack of chikungunya and dengue fever. In addition, we wanted to share with our community the way to health through Christian Science.

What follows is an edited summary of the panel discussion “Practice that truly heals,” held on Saturday, June 3, 2017, in the Extension of The Mother Church and broadcast live online. The panel was one of the events held during the weekend prior to Annual Meeting.

Each year, our church sponsors a Christian Science lecture, given by a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship. The lecture is for the community, on a topic we feel will particularly bless others.

The following is an edited excerpt of the Christian Science Associations Workshop held June 4, 2017, the day before Annual Meeting, in the Extension of The Mother Church.   To open the workshop, Allison (Skip) Phinney, a member of the Christian Science Board of Directors, introduced himself and Robin Hoagland, also a member of the Board of Directors.

Back in our early twenties, my wife and I moved from Boston back to our native Albany, New York, area. We brought with us our young dog, Cannon—how we loved that dog!  I hadn’t found employment yet, but a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, nearby had set aside funds to paint the exterior of their building.

I greatly enjoyed reading an interview about The Christian Science Monitor in the June 2016 Journal. The Monitor ’s principled standard of striving to report unadulterated news encourages idea-based solutions for global human needs.

Jesus said he would found his church on the “rock,” Christ, and promised: “The gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (see Matthew 16:13–19 ). The early Christian Church certainly proved it was able to withstand relentless persecution, as it grew and demonstrated its efficacy.
