Testimonies of Healing
FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS I was addicted to cigarette smoking, and it was not easy for me to control or to quit it, because I didn't see anything wrong with it. I thought it helped me kill boredom and stress.
AFTER MY DAUGHTER CHARYS'S healing of depression (see pages 49–50), I began to read Science and Health. At first, I struggled a lot with Mary Baker Eddy's book.
I WANT TO EXPRESS my immense gratitude for Christian Science, because without it I never would have gotten through my rigorous PhD program, which lasted four and a half years. After strolling past a Reading Room in San Francisco in the early '90s, I decided to go in and read The Christian Science Monitor.
SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, as a grandmother, I applied to join the Peace Corps. They required that I have a thorough, detailed physical exam—a total of 25 pages of reports and test results.
SEVERAL YEARS AGO while I was traveling in Greece, I came down with a fever one morning. My thoughts had been stirred up with some difficulties I was having with my traveling companions and the logistics of the trip.
A FEW YEARS AGO I experienced bouts of severe abdominal pain that lasted for some 15 or 20 minutes each time. Incapacitated by the pain, I would lie down and silently affirm spiritual truths I had learned through my years as a student of Christian Science.
THE OPENING STATEMENT from Science and Health, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings" ( p. vii ), has long been a favorite reminder that trusting God brings only goodness into our lives.
SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, I brought home a large, explosively athletic dog from an animal shelter—she was about a year and a half old, part Boxer, part Great Dane, as far as we could tell. As she took off after a cat in the yard, the rope attached to her that I held in my hand sharply and severely twisted my fingers.
I HAD ALWAYS THOUGHT of myself as a pretty happy person. I think that's how most other people saw me, too.
SEVERAL YEARS AGO my wife and I were driving home after visiting one of our daughters in another state about 1,000 miles away. On the third day of the return trip, I began to experience extreme pain in my back and abdominal area.
