Spiritual Short

I was very excited when our family bought a car with a GPS in it. Soon after our purchase, we drove to a familiar city about two hours away.

A few years ago I volunteered at the local elementary school, working with children who were having difficulty learning to read. The teacher gave me simple stories, and the children were to read them for me over and over, so that they mastered the stories and gained confidence in their reading abilities.

Christ Jesus’ ministry started with only a few disciples, but this work brought about profound healing. Centuries after, creed and dogma seemed to hide Christian healing, but Christ’s teachings were not forever silenced.

It has been said that every problem is a vision problem. I am learning that the quality of one’s vision depends on how spiritual it is.

Many years ago, when I first became a student of Christian Science, I spent many hours studying the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, listening for God’s guidance. Once as I was deep in study, though, I felt suddenly unwell.

“Somewhere, sometime, somehow, I will learn to be more Christlike. ” That was always my deepest wish over the years as I grew up in Christian Science.

As a young mother, I often turned to a local Christian Science practitioner for help. We called her “Grandma Helen” because she was like family.

The words we choose when praying might be significant. Silent words can indicate our heart’s desire.

Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures asks, then answers: “What is the scientific statement of being?” ( p. 468 ).

Almost every time I drive by our local schools, I ask God for inspiration on praying for their students and staff. Sometimes I take one synonym for God and think about the qualities that especially relate and how they are present for everyone in the school.
