If anybody thinks that the days of...

If anybody thinks that the days of martyrdom for opinions are passed, let him step out from the conservative ranks wherein he marches, and join a radical wing of the army, or enter a new service altogether.

The man who does it will soon find himself a martyr, no matter how conscientious his motives. The only thing to be regretted in such case is that the come-outer soon developes an intolerance, a decided improvement on the stay-inners'.

Who were more bigoted and cruelly intolerant than the blessed old Puritans, when they found a country where the English church did not rule?
