SCIENCE versus SPIRITUALISM

From the October 1884 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Students of Christian Science acting in the capacity of healers of disease, are asked many and various questions by the uninformed as to their faith and methods. We have invited a few students to note some of these questions, and answers as given by themselves. The following are some of them.

"Do Christian Scientists ever commune with departed spirits in diagnosing cases of physical derangement? How does the Scientist explain the existence of evil in the world? What is the basis of healing power?"

Worcester defines Spiritualism as "the doctrine that intercourse is held with departed spirits," and in that sense Spiritualism is as far removed from Christian Science as earth from heaven. The Christian Scientist does not "commune" with spirits, present or departed, for he knows there are no spirits. He knows there is but one Spirit, and that is God, (Good). He knows that if God is omnipresent there can be no room for evil in any form, whether of sin or sickness, and herefore, that what is termed "evil" can exist only as a belief, an unreality. God is Spirit, and to worship him through understanding and obedience as omnipotence and omnipresence, is to be endued with power from on high to heal all manner of diseases.
