I first heard of Christian Science about four years ago...

From the December 1904 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I first heard of Christian Science about four years ago when I was in a very deplorable condition both mentally and physically. At that time I was just trying by every material means, including will-power, to regain my health and strength after a second very severe operation. I did not see much prospect of ever being a well woman, and with my living to earn, naturally the future did not hold very bright prospects for me. I was willing to try anything, so I went to a practitioner, but had very little faith and knew nothing of Christian Science except that the practitioner told me I could be well and strong. I was helped very much in about two treatments, and the good seed was sown, but through mortal mind I would not let truth do its full work, so I went back to materia medica and underwent another operation, though never quite sure whether or not I was doing right. A short time after this, my brother, who was seemingly in perfect health, was stricken with paralysis and the doctors held out very little hope of his recovery. Then it was that I felt the need of a higher power: I turned with renewed energy to Christian Science, began to learn the depth of its meaning, and have never since doubted it. My own health and strength gradually returned, and the glimpse of a new life began to dawn on me. Now I am well and strong, and happier than I have ever been.

I am very grateful for the physical healing, and I give thanks every day more especially for the change in my mental conditions and for spiritual enlightenment. Christian Science solves all the problems in my work, and enables me to help my co-workers. My heart goes out in love and gratitude to my teacher and to our dear Leader, who has so patiently and lovingly re-opened the way for us, and who by her pure life continually holds the lamp before our feet.—
