For sixteen years Christian Science has been the only...

From the May 1906 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For sixteen years Christian Science has been the only remedy for all our ills. About seventeen years prior to hearing of Christian Science I was taken very ill, and a medical doctor who was called in said I was completely run down and that my blood had turned to water. He attended me for several months but I received no benefit. My face and limbs would swell to such an extent that my friends became alarmed and called in another doctor, who attended me for a considerable time, but still no relief. Then another was called, who said that nothing could be done for me. After trying the most prominent doctors in Kingston, we came to Toronto and engaged the best we could find in this city. The first one advised me to undergo an operation, but after that experience I was much worse, although I remained under his treatment for about a year. His effort to help me only added more suffering. One doctor after another was employed, but without any good results. One said I had taken entirely too much medicine and that my stomach was ruined by it, that all he could do for me was to inject morphine to stop the pain. Another physician pronounced my case heart disease. He gave me some medicine, the effect of which made me still worse, and he admitted that he had been mistaken in his treatment. He then told me to keep perfectly quiet and not to allow myself to get startled at anything, as this might cause instant death.

I had been brought up by a praying mother, who had taught me to love the Bible and to believe that its promises were for us, and I prayed in my simple way for God to send some means that would heal me of my diseases, or give some relief from this terrible agony, but no healing came. I then thought that probably it was not God's will I should be healed, and in my despair I prayed for death, thinking it would end my suffering, but even that did not come to my rescue. Then I began to doubt if there was a God, since He did not answer my prayers. So serious was my case that when I retired for the night I did not expect to rise again. This was the condition I was in when we first heard of Christian Science.

My husband heard of it and asked me to try it, but I said there was no use in my trying anything more. He, however, insisted; so to please him I promised, and took treatment at once. In two weeks I could notice considerable improvement. In about three months I found myself well, able to attend to all my duties and to dismiss the help kept on account of my illness. In the intervening years I have had no return of the old trouble, and during these sixteen years there have not been any material remedies used in our home, thus proving the Scripture that God is a present help in every hour of need.
