Through the faithfulness of several loyal students of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and my own study of the Christian Science text-book, given to the world through the unselfish and untiring devotion of its author, Mrs. Eddy, I have been healed in body, and have gained a spiritual consciousness of the truth of being.
Departing from the teachings of an orthodox church, I entered the mazes of material human philosophy, social and political economy, so-called mental science, theosophy, oriental religions, etc., and after fifteen years of careless drifting without an anchor, I became conscious of having no substantial standard of morality. This weakening of the moral fibre was arrested through Christian Science practice, and I was saved from further moral degeneracy. Before this healing, I found that years of more or less dissipation had slowly but surely undermined my health and sense of energy. In this half emasculated condition I offered to try to execute some special work in trade journalism, but through a morbid despondency, growing out of the past, and the sudden appearance of the first stage of an hereditary affliction of deafness, I was unable to bring my work to a successful issue. The older schools of medicine offered no hope, and in my desire for healing I first turned to osteopathy, but received no help.
After losing my position there followed weeks of idleness and discouragement, when one day I picked up a Christian Science Journal, and although for ten years I had maintained a prejudiced opposition to Christian Science, yet with the first reading of an authoritative article I knew I had found the pearl of great price. I read every article, editorial, and testimonial, sought a practitioner that same day, and fear was allayed and hope restored in the first interview.
