I offer the following testimony as an expression of gratitude for the liberty I have found in Christian Science. For over seventeen years I suffered from the effects of a sunstroke, which were manifested in diseases of the stomach and kidneys, etc. I underwent three operations, was under the care of physicians for years, and took a great deal of medicine, but grew worse instead of better. I also took quantities of stimulants to enable me to keep at work, although the reaction from this would leave me weak and helpless for months. Finally I was almost wholly an invalid.
This was my condition when on Aug. 8, 1907, I began to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and to take treatment. I received some benefit from the first, but was unable to see the healing truth until six months later, when the thought that God is the Life of man dawned upon me with wonderful effect, and I found my freedom. Since then I have been able to work harder without ill effects, than for seventeen years, and I have gained in strength and weight. I was addicted to the use of tobacco and profanity, but after three treatments in Christian Science these habits left me. This passage from Science and Health (p. 377) has helped to lift my thought from matter as reality: "Without the human belief, any circumstance is of itself powerless to produce suffering." I am very grateful for the wonderful physical healing, but more grateful for the spiritual uplift that has come to me through the study of Science and Health and the Lesson-Sermons, and the faithful work done for me.
