Testimonies of Healing

About four years ago I was taken with stomach trouble,...

From the January 1909 issue of The Christian Science Journal

About four years ago I was taken with stomach trouble, which steadily grew worse until I became so emaciated and weak that I was no longer able to walk to and from my work. During the first two years of my suffering I was unable to eat anything of a solid nature without its causing severe pain. I had tried several doctors, in each case with the same result, and though I was continually taking medicine, with each course of treatment I seemed to grow weaker and worse. After having tried almost every known material remedy, a friend advised me to try Christian Science, of which I knew little or nothing and was wont to classify it with the many "isms" of which we hear so much nowadays.

It did not, however, require a great amount of persuasion to induce me to accept Christian Science treatment, for I had lost faith in materia medica and was willing to turn to anything that presented a ray of hope. At the request of my friend I wrote to a practitioner with whom she was personally acquainted, stated my case, and asked for treatment. In due time I received a reply to my letter. and among other things I was told to eat what was set before me; advice which I followed then, and have done ever since—now more than two years. I continued to take treatment for about two months, at the end of which time I was completely healed, not only of the stomach trouble, but of kidney and bladder trouble from which I had been a sufferer for many years; also of the tobacco habit, to which I had been a slave.

I am grateful for the physical healing, but am more thankful for the spiritual uplifting which I have experienced through the study of Science and Health, and with the aid of other Christian Science literature. There are those who are wont to doubt the efficacy of absent treatment, and for that reason I wish to present this testimonial in support of the fact that God is omnipotent and omnipresent, and that Truth and Love are at all times equal to our every need. As has been said by our beloved Leader, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). If sinning and suffering humanity only believed and understood this great truth, then indeed would all discordant conditions disappear and peace and harmony reign. For these and many other blessings I am truly thankful to God, and to Mrs. Eddy for discovering this great truth and presenting it to the world.—
