Early in 1906 a friend took me to a Christian Science meeting, and although I did not comprehend what I heard, yet I did feel the presence of divine Love. I determined to test the healing, because I was then suffering from a severe nervous disease, with stomach and abdominal trouble, etc., from which I had suffered for many years. I wrote to a Christian Science practitioner in Hamburg, but she was too busy to take patients from other cities, and advised me to study the text-book and Der Herold. I immediately bought a copy of Science and Health and subscribed for Der Herold, and began my work alone, with perfect confidence in God.
I soon recognized in this movement a holy Cause, and knew that my hunger to draw closer to God would be stilled. I realized a depth of Christianity which I had hitherto sought but had not found. The grandeur of this great work began to dawn upon me, and I was determined to press on, and not be confused by the ignorant criticism of the newspapers. In spite, however, of the change in my thought, the symptoms of my diseases seemed to become more alarming, and I wrote to a practitioner in Dresden, because at that time my friends seemed to consider my condition incurable. Although this practitioner was also very busy, she took my case, and I soon began to feel the presence of our loving Father. After three weeks' treatment I began to realize the happiness which this understanding brings to us.
The peace and love which have been mine since the first treatment are indescribable. I had at once refreshing sleep. The stomach trouble became less and less, and the other diseases vanished slowly into their native nothingness. The greatest blessing of all is when we realize what it means to be a child of God and to have the Christ in us. After about eight weeks' treatment I was completely healed of all my trouble. I have no words to express my gratitude to God, and to Mrs. Eddy, but I know that I can show this gratitude by bearing the fruits of love.— Itzehoe, Holstein, Germany.
