In March, 1904, while visiting relatives in San Francisco, I first heard of Christian Science. At that time I was wearing glasses and had worn them nearly two years, and when told that I need not use them any longer, I scoffed at the idea; but, seeing what benefit my brother's family had received through this blessed truth, I decided to give Christian Science a fair test, as I was very much dissatisfied with my old religious beliefs, which were of the Jewish faith. My whole life had been one of dissatisfaction: I believed that I was a failure, bound with the shackles of evil, and my disposition was such that many times I wished myself beyond the mortal.
Having seen the good done for my people, I thought Christian Science must be good for me, and right there I bought a Bible, a copy of Science and Health, and a Quarterly. I started to read and study the Lessons, and from that time I never had any use for glasses and my eyes are now stronger than ever. One month after taking up Science, I was healed in one night of a severe attack of throat trouble, which showed me beyond all doubt that Christian Science is the truth which makes men free. The Bible, which I had never read, was a revelation to me; the understanding came slowly but surely; I was as one newly born; a new light was shining,—I had found a God who is Love, omnipotent, supreme, ever present; in all our needs, the infinite source of supply. My whole life was changed; my disposition had undergone a renovation; instead of jealousy, hatred, revenge, and worry, I had gained a sense of love, and that peace which passes all human understanding.
The physical healing, however, cannot be compared with the spiritual uplifting I have received. Words alone cannot express it! Christian Science is of inestimable value to me in business, and I would not be without it. I shall never be able to thank God enough for inspiring our dearly beloved Leader to guide us out of the desert into the promised land, and for bringing this saving power to those who are seeking for the kingdom of God. We can repay her only in part for what we have received. Our daily study of the Lessons helps us to be strong, and although not yet perfect, I shall strive to be worthy of the name Christian Scientist. I feel it my duty to acknowledge our Leader as the Discoverer of Christian Science, the foundation of which is the rock Christ, which neither crumbles nor falls.—isalia, Cal.
