Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his...

From the November 1911 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who healeth all thy diseases." So sang the psalmist more than nineteen hundred years ago, and today from every quarter of the globe come songs of thanksgiving from those who have sought and found the truth which sets free, the truth that was meant for all time. Having come through "the valley of the shadow," I should like to add my testimony to those already given in the Journal and Sentinel.

In November, 1904, I contracted a very severe cold, which later developed into a serious illness. Having all my life enjoyed the best of health, I gave little heed at first to the condition, but the cough remained even more distressing than at first. Our family physician, whose ability as a doctor cannot be questioned, did all he could to relieve me, even suggesting a change of climate; but I continued to cough. I was under his care for three and a half months, during which time my mental condition was such that words could but feebly express it. I became very sensitive, shunning friends, church, and Society whenever it was possible. From every side, I seemed to see the result of this trouble, and I could feel that my friends thought the same, because of their oversolicitous attentions to me.

It was while on a visit to Baltimore. Md., during the early spring of 1905, that Christian Science was offered me, and in less than six weeks I was entirely healed, both mentally and physically, through absent treatment. The fear that the trouble might return at some future date, or with the changes of the weather, was not, however, entirely destroyed until about one and a half years ago. Among other ailments which have been overcome since taking up the study of Christian Science, are unusually severe headaches, with which I was attacked twice a month for more than eight years. While I am more than grateful for my restoration to health and wholeness, which I now know is our natural inheritance from our loving Father, God, words are inadequate to express my sense of gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for her wonderful book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and for the spiritual understanding of the Bible which I am gaining each day through the study of this book. I now know that God is an ever-present help; that He is "the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever," and that Jesus came to do the will of the Father and destroy the works of the devil, — sin, disease, and everything that is unlike God, good.
