I would be robbing others as well as myself were I to keep silent longer regarding the blessings which I have received through Christian Science. Over ten years ago my husband became afflicted with a malignant disease on the right leg. The pain was so terrible that he became almost distracted, and the physician whom I called in said that it was a disease of the bone, and that an operation would have to be performed. The operation was performed, after which my husband was in bed for three months, during which time we had to carry him from one bed to the other, and his suffering was so great that he was almost helpless. Three months later the physician said that he should be taken to the hospital for another operation. He remained there eleven weeks, and an effort was made twice to locate the diseased part of the bone; but the leg never healed, the wound remaining open. A year later he again went to the hospital and underwent the fourth operation. He suffered a great deal under the hands of the physicians, and for four long years was unable to work. After this the leg healed and he was able to walk, but three years later it opened again, and he suffered fully as much as he did before, the physicians being unable to help.
It was at this time, while in the gr eatest need, that I heard of Christian Science, and asked a practitioner to call. Never in my life shall I forget the words which this woman spoke to me: that God is Love, and that it was not His will that we should suffer in this way. I was astonished! Had I not often read in the Bible that God is Love? Our pastor had often told us that God sends us afflictions in order to draw us nearer unto Him, but it was impossible for me to trust a God who was supposed to be so cruel as to inflict such suffering upon His children. I however learned to trust God when I saw that He helped us out of our distressed condition. My husband's leg was healed, and he was able to take up his work once more. We were in bad circumstances, and I never seemed able to pay the practitioner as it would have been proper to do; but she lovingly told me that I should not worry about it; that she did not work in the Father's vineyard for the money's sake. I kept quiet then, but in my heart the desire firmly took root to adhere to this truth with God's help.
For all this, as well as for the blessings and lessons which I have received through Christian Science, I am thankful with all my heart to God, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. —Rochester, N. Y.
