The blessings and peace of mind which have come to me...

From the November 1911 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The blessings and peace of mind which have come to me through Christian Science are too many to leave untold, and it is with a feeling of unbounded gratitude that I give this testimony, hoping it may be the means of leading others into the truth and bringing them happiness. I was led into Science; first by seeing my good wife transformed from a physical wreck into perfect health, and second by receiving immediate relief myself from what seemed to be serious afflictions.

I have spent most of my life in operating woodworking machinery, and have been badly injured more than once. My worst accident was in January, 1910, when in charge of planing-mills, twenty miles from Eugene, Ore. I was caught in the groin by a heavy timber as it came from a big machine, and pinioned against a stationary bench, where I was held for more than a minute, seemingly between life and death. When released I fell forward across the bench, asking the men to leave me alone for a minute or two. I applied the truth as best I could, then straightened up, and was led into the filing-room. They wanted me to lie down, or to be carried home, but I quietly ordered them back to work, removed my overalls, and walked to my room, three hundred yards away. The company physician had been called in the mean time, and after examining me, stated that the pelvic bone was badly injured; but knowing that I was a Scientist, he made no suggestion. I then walked to the station and took the train, reaching Eugene at noon, where I telephoned for a Christian Science practitioner. By this time I had spent about an hour reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and though I was suffering from an intense soreness, I got partial relief quickly after the practitioner arrived.

This was on Saturday. I slept well that night, dressed and attended church on Sunday, and in the afternoon walked to the practitioner's home, twelve blocks. My family, though hundreds of miles away, were during this time on the road to join me, reaching me on Monday morning. I located them that day, and returned to my work Tuesday, causing much surprise among my men, who had set apart six weeks at least for my sojourn in a hospital. Though my complete recovery was rather slow, on account of the partial paralysis of one leg, it was perfect.
