Testimonies of Healing

Having received so much help...

From the May 1912 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Having received so much help from the testimonies which appear in the Sentinel, I send this, thankful if it will be a help to any one who is seeking for the light. About fifteen years ago I was attracted to Christian Science by the healing of a friend who was very dear to me. At that time I was sick, discouraged, tired of life, seeing nothing ahead but distress and poverty for myself and little children. Is it any wonder that I doubted God, despised the life I was living, while I knew not where to look for better things or how to pray? I thought if there were a God He was not even as just as a human parent, or He would surely lift us out of our distress; yet with mighty love and outstretched arm He was helping us more than I realized at that time.

Then Science and Health was placed in my hand and I was asked to read it. So, to please my sister and the friend who had been healed of a malignant disease, I commenced to read. From the first ii seemed to me I drank in the truth; and in less than three months Christian Science had done what doctors had failed to do in eight years. For the first time in my life I was a well woman, able to do heavy work; in fact, to work and "not be weary." I destroyed all my material remedies, and relied on Truth to the best of my understanding. At one time I called on a practitioner to treat my husband, and on a friend to treat my son; but the real test came nearly fourteen years later. A bright, beautiful daughter was stricken down with a fever, and congestion of the brain was in evidence. A physician was called and he came twice, but suddenly, in a rational moment, my daughter refused to take the medicine and begged for Christian Science treatment, so we dismissed the doctor and telephoned to a friend for help in Christian Science. I, the mother, quailed at times before the evidence of the senses, but God's mercy was with us all. Many times friends thought the child was passing out; then they thought she would live, but with the light of reason gone. It seemed to me sometimes as if I were in Gethsemane with no one to help me watch but two faithful daughters. The loyal practitioner, however, stood for the truth, and we nursed, watched, and prayed, God helping and strengthening us day by day. After weeks, nay, some months of careful nursing, my daughter commenced to improve. Now she is well and happy, has enjoyed a visit with friends in a distant city, and gives God thanks that Christian Science saved her life and reason.

We have tested the truth of Christian Science, and give thanks to God for the understanding to grasp the great truth taught in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. We are also grateful to the faithful practitioner who stood for the truth, with no hope of reward save the "Well done, thou good and faithful servant," from the Master she was striving to obey. We should all of us thank God that Christian Science is founded on the rock and is so sure that error's waves can never overthrow it.—
