About ten years ago my attention was called to Christian Science by the healing of my wife through her study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I myself had been suffering many years from a complication of diseases which had brought much discouragement to me and mine. The most distressing, though not the most dangerous phase, was bronchial and asthmatic trouble. For several years previous to this time my physical condition was gradually growing worse from lung disease, notwithstanding that I had the best medical attention and home care. In consequence of the physical weakening I was not able properly to attend to my business. A cough was almost incessant and was much aggravated at night. For a while the asthmatic conditions were partially relieved by medical treatment, but in time these remedies failed, and catarrhal conditions of stomach and bowels were becoming more and more aggravated. I had cold sweats, which did not yield to the usual remedies, and even in our balmiest days I wore chamois protectors to ward off the currents of air.
Up to the time of my wife's treatment we knew nothing of Christian Science, but when she was healed I knew that divine power alone had done the work. Notwithstanding this proof, I doubted for a moment that wasted lung tissue could be restored. Then I commenced to believe; and the study began. We bought all the Christian Science literature we could get, and read it, fully casting our lot with Christian Science. From the first the progress of the physical ailments was checked, and soon thereafter improvement set in. For nearly three years the fight lasted, but after each struggle a higher plane of thought was reached. The realization that the divine utterance, "I will put none of these diseases upon thee," meant that God was not the author of sickness, finally brought health and peace to me. I have remained healed, and can testify that none of the diseases that oppressed me are upon me now. Mrs. Eddy's statement, "Evil is not power," is as true as St. John's declaration that "God is love," and daily proofs are about me that "all power belongs to God, good" (Science and Health, pp. 192, 490).
I have known what it is to walk through "the valley of the shadow of death," but not once in all my struggles was I tempted to go back to matter for relief. To say that my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for this revelation of Truth is unbounded, but feebly expresses my thought.— Pasadena, Cal.
