Five years having passed since I was released from the bonds of sickness and sorrow, I feel that I can give a fair and impartial testimony to the efficacy of Christian Science, hoping it may benefit other sufferers. For three years I was under the constant care of physicians, but each diagnosis seemed to abandon me to greater despair. A goiter in the most malignant form had developed on both sides of my neck. The physicians were making heroic efforts to relieve me when accompanying symptoms of dropsy and heart trouble manifested themselves. In this weakened condition I was told that tubercular disease had made me its prey and that recovery was absolutely impossible. As a result of this sentence, I put to myself the question Mrs. Eddy asked, "Are material means the only refuge from fatal chances?" (Science and Health, p. 39.)
When death seemed imminent a Christian Science practitioner was called in, and it was indeed a revelation to learn of our Saviour's mighty influence in sickness as well as sin. I was consciously benefited from the first, and possibly it may be a gleam of hope to those to whom deliverance is coming slowly, that a year had passed before the last vestige of the disease was eradicated. I owe unbounded thanks to our Leader, through whose efforts so many are realizing their kinship to the divine power that seemed alien while they were immersed in material beliefs.—Rivera, Cal.
