I desire publicly to express my sincere gratitude for the many blessings which God has sent me through Christian Science. Two years ago I was spending the summer in the mountains, and one Saturday morning I became violently ill, vomiting, and with great distress in the bowels. This condition became more and more serious during the afternoon. In the confusion caused by my sudden illness I lost my glasses, and could not have the help from reading the Bible or Science and Health. I had then been a student of Christian Science only a short time, but I repeated the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) and all the passages of Scripture that I could remember, though I could not rule out all fear.
During the afternoon I telegraphed to a Christian Science practitioner, but the source through which the message was sent to the telegraph office was so unreliable that I doubted if it would ever reach her. That night hemorrhage of the bowels, accompanied by severe pain, began, and continued for forty-eight hours. Monday morning found me greatly reduced in strength. I had refused all material remedies, accepting only the services of a maid, as the people of the house were very antagonistic to Christian Science. That morning my glasses were found, and after reading a short time in the Bible and Science and Health, I realized that I had been controlled more by fear than by faith, and that I had only to place unwavering faith in God's promises, as taught in Christian Science, and I should be healed. I began to improve; and that afternoon a reassuring message came from my practitioner. In less than an hour the hemorrhage stopped, and I began to gain strength very rapidly. The following day I was able to take my meals in the hotel dining-room as usual, with no bad results following, and within a week I took a five-mile walk on a mountain trail. I have never experienced any return of this ailment.
This is only one of ray many wonderful healings in Christian Science. Previous to the foregoing experience I received the blessing of instantaneous healing of a serious form of ill— ness. This was the first time I had called a practitioner, and I was raised up from a painful and debilitated condition in one hour. All pain, weakness, and other distressing conditions disappeared, and I passed from a sense of loathing of food to one of acute hunger. This great change came over me a little before noon. I dressed alone, and walked down-town, ate a hearty meal, and went for a long walk, feeling perfectly well. The next day I went to San Francisco on an early train, returning at six in the afternoon, after a strenuous day, feeling happy and exhilarated by that wonderful uplift which follows divine healing.
