Testimonies of Healing

[Translated from the German]

Unspeakable gratitude to God...

From the November 1913 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Unspeakable gratitude to God prompts me to testify to the blessings which I have received through Christian Science. During the past ten years I have experienced various ills, including lung and kidney trouble, pleurisy and appendicitis, making it necessary for me to spend from eight to twelve weeks in the hospital every year. Despite the faithful efforts of the physicians, my condition grew worse constantly, and a year ago one of the physicians prescribed as a last resort a sojourn in a sanitarium for pulmonary disease. There was no improvement, however, but in addition to the lung trouble a spinal affection set in, so that after a while I was laid up in a paralyzed condition with high fever. Moreover, there was a constant struggle with a chronic stomach trouble which made it almost impossible for me to take nourishment. In June, 1912, I was taken by the head physician to a hospital in order to have an operation for appendicitis performed. Upon my request, however, this was not done. After I had spent three months there with my condition continually growing worse, although every possible means was employed for my benefit, my limbs began to lose feeling, and I was dismissed as incurable.

I knew of Christian Science, but entertained no hope of benefit thereby, as I was not sufficiently acquainted with the subject. Five of my sisters had passed on with tubercular disease, and from this I inferred that there was no help for me; besides, the physicians had told me so more than once. However, some Christian Science literature was again given me by a dear friend, and as I seemed to improve perceptibly through the reading, I made up my mind to write to a Christian Science practitioner. After the first absent treatment I was able to lay aside the crutches which I had been using; and when, after the second treatment, I came to the realization that we are God's children and that He does not make His children sick or will them to be so, I saw that there was the possibility for me to attain to perfect health; and my joy was indescribable when, after a short but earnest struggle with mortal sense, it was given me to greet a most beautiful morning that brought me a health and happiness which no earthly power can take away. Thus three absent treatments in Christian Science have brought upon me an infinite blessing. May all who are diseased and unhappy remember Jesus' words, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

I would also like to give expression to my deepfelt gratitude to our unselfish Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the many blessings which have been made accessible to mankind through Christian Science.—
