KNOWING AND HAVING

From the November 1913 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WE are told by our Leader that "the spiritual reality is the scientific fact in all things" (Science and Health, p. 207). The constant realization that as God's children we have all good, brings all good into our human experience. Nothing can then stand between us and attainment. In other words, the scientific knowing that we have is the having. Man has all good now, he always has had it, he always will have it, because whatever is real is eternal. Like the great Wayshower, it is "the same yesterday, and today, and forever." Nothing can diminish, take away from, or lessen the infinite. Therefore living in the infinite good, God's man has all good, and has it now, regardless of external appearances.

Jesus demonstrated this when, at the tomb of Lazarus, in the presence of apparent death, his prayer was, "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me." His clear consciousness that eternal life was the spiritual reality, then and there brought its immediate externalization in the return to the human sense of Lazarus. Moreover, this was in accord with his previous declaration to the disciples: "What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."

Two illustrations of this fact that the knowing is the having and that the spiritual knowing must be humanly externalized, are given with striking similarity in the Bible. One, in the New Testament, is well known; the other, in the Septuagint version of the Old Testament, is practically unknown, because omitted in the Hebrew version from which our King James translation was made.
