A sense of gratitude and joy impels me to tell of the benefits received through Christian Science. About thirteen years ago I was suddenly taken ill with an abdominal complaint and a most serious mental and nervous trouble which necessitated medical attendance, though none of the physicians were able to relieve me of the disease and suffering. I was not without a certain amount of trust in God, and this induced me to read the Scriptures and the hymn-book in search of comfort. In so doing my eyes fell upon a passage which read, "My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." I never forgot these words during the long period of suffering, yet I did not grasp their deeper meaning.
As the years went by my illness increased in severity, so that even ray husband and children had to suffer from its effects upon me, and yet there seemed to be no help, for none of the many physicians whom I had consulted were able to afford relief. One day a good friend came and endeavored to make me see the true remedy for my ills. He told me of Christian Science, but my fear was so great that I failed to respond. Arrangements had been made for me to go to the clinique in Magdeburg on the following day. Here my trouble was somewhat relieved, though I did not regain health.
After a few weeks I again heard of Christian Science, and this time I took courage and went to Berlin to a Christian Science practitioner, who kindly explained this teaching to me. From that moment on, I earnestly endeavored to hold fast to what I recognized to be the truth, and then the promise which I had read years before came true in my case. My trouble yielded, and from that hour the world appeared to me in a new and bright light, so that I grasped the deep import of the Master's words: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." It is a matter of deep gratitude and joy to me to be able to state that during the short time of my acquaintance with the teachings of Christian Science it has been my privilege to see my husband healed of acute lung trouble and my daughter of appendicitis, through my understanding of the truth, no practitioner having been called upon to assist in either of these serious cases.
