Testimonies of Healing

After seeing a case healed...

From the October 1914 issue of The Christian Science Journal

AFTER seeing a case healed through Christian Science, these thoughts came to me: What have these people that we have not? Is it of God or not? The desire to answer these questions led my husband and myself to study the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and after reading it for a few weeks we determined that the next time any sickness came to us we would apply for Christian Science treatment. Later I was taken ill with a throat affection, from which I had suffered quite frequently before, and asked for absent treatment, thinking I could realize the healing as coming from God if I did not see the practitioner. When I awoke the next morning I was free, and from that day, which was about five years ago, no material remedies have been used in our home.

The spiritual help received through Christian Science, to my thought, far outweighs the physical. Through the study of this teaching I am striving to learn to love every one with whom I come in contact, to see each as in truth God's perfect child, and to know the nothingness of all that is unlike God. I am especially thankful for lessons received during the five weeks that my husband lay ill in bed a few years ago. My relatives live ten thousand miles away, and consequently I was alone with him day and night, with the exception of the practitioner, one faithful friend who came and brought in the coal and wood, and a young English woman (a trained nurse),—these were my only visitors. We were alone with God, and it seemed from day to day that we drew closer to Him, until we seemed to be encircled with the "peace of God, which passeth all understanding." Although on occasions it seemed as though my husband would pass on, still there was nothing but peace. The sense of loneliness that has overwhelmed me at other times when he has had serious illness, was quite absent, and I was only conscious of peace and quiet.

For each and every experience of that time I am thankful to God, since they were all opportunities of proving the power of God, and I learned more of love for mankind than I ever knew before. The conditions under Christian Science treatment were so different from those under medical treatment that the nurse, when herself threatened with fever a few weeks after my husband's recovery, asked to come to our home for Christian Science treatment, and was soon healed.
