Testimonies of Healing

I feel that I have a personal duty...

From the November 1914 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I feel that I have a personal duty to perform,—that of expressing my gratitude through the Sentinel for the great benefits I have received from Christian Science. Language fails to express my gratitude to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for giving so great a boon to mankind as the understanding of how to obtain our God-given heritage,—the destruction of sin, disease, suffering, and all untoward conditions, thereby obtaining freedom, harmony, and peace in proportion to this understanding as taught in the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and given to the whole world. I am deeply thankful to God for His goodness, and would say, in the words of the psalmist, "Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!" "Who is so great a God as our God?"

As I was an active church-member, I was slow to acknowledge my healing through Christian Science; indeed, I did not acknowledge my first healing. Then I was again reminded of the need of gratitude, of heeding the Scripture which says, "Forget not all his benefits."

In July, 1910, after suffering day and night for several years, and being scarcely able to get about at all on account of rheumatism, and after I had exhausted all available material remedies without benefit, but instead was growing worse, with great reluctance, on account of my church, I yielded to the desires of friends that I should try Christian Science. I called a practitioner whom I knew well, for he had years before been a worker in the same church, and I therefore had great confidence in him as a Christian. He came in the forenoon and talked about an hour, quoting the Scriptures and explaining and making all so clear and plain that I told him I wanted treatment. He gave me a silent, present treatment, and went away. That night I went to bed, and slept sweetly and harmoniously all night without a pain; for I did not have to be up and down and pack myself with pillows, as I had done before. The next morning I got up, went to work, and was well. Nevertheless I disdained to acknowledge my healing through Christian Science, and went on my way as before.
