I have so many things to be grateful for in Christian Science that it would be difficult to enumerate them all, but I would like to relate my first demonstration in Science. For thirty years I was a victim of the drink habit, for over fifteen years being completely dominated thereby. I constantly struggled to overcome the habit, but the longest I was able to hold out against it was six weeks. I tried every cure of which I was told, and after taking one well-known cure abstained for fifteen months, but I craved drink constantly. I used to walk up and down past saloons merely to smell the odor coming from them; I gambled constantly to keep my mind from the drink and sought all kinds of excitement to keep me from it, but it did me no good. I gave way at last and drank for one whole night and day.
I have been under the care of doctors dozens of times and several professed to be able to cure me. I was in business for sixteen years in Indianapolis, Ind., but drink brought me so low that I was ashamed to walk the streets. At last in desperation I sold out and fled; but this did not cure me, although it checked the habit for a short time.
I had now arrived at the point where death was preferable to life and I was debating the easiest way to wind it up, when the angel of Christian Science stepped in and removed my burden. Only the drinker and his loved ones can know what relief, what a blessing I have received from Christian Science. I thank God and am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for the light of Truth. I hope these lines will help some other struggling heart, for God is good, and it brings a rich reward to be a follower of Christ Jesus.
