I am writing this testimony with a sense of great joy and gratitude, and also with the feeling that it is my duty to tell of the many blessings which I have received through Christian Science. For many years I suffered from headaches and never felt entirely well. Every attempt to do strenuous work was followed by a nervous condition which kept me from sleeping at night. The trouble grew worse from year to year, until in May, 1912, it reached a point where it became unbearable. I then had treatment for the first time from a well known woman physician, according to whose diagnosis I was afflicted with a serious abdominal complaint, for which she. treated me three weeks. Nevertheless the condition grew worse, and she assured me that the. trouble, which was of long standing, could be relieved only by an operation. I went home dejected, and feeling that I could not decide upon this question at once, despite the fact that I experienced great difficulty in performing my household duties. It was evident to me, however, that something must be done, and I finally made up my mind to have the operation performed, although this meant an awful struggle.
I prayed to know if it were God's will, but things took another turn, in proof that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." A few days before I was due at the hospital I received a letter from my dear mother, in which she called my attention to Christian Science. I immediately decided to give it a trial, and through a dear relative in Zurich became acquainted with a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly took up treatment. I was told that God is Love, and only Love; that we are His children, and that He does not want us to be sick. Great joy filled my heart, and the pain began to yield. I fully trusted that I would recover health through Christian Science and returned home in a happy frame of mind. The healing took place during the following night, when all at once I felt as if great weights were being rolled off me. I was healed in that instant, and quite overcome by a sense of gratitude, I gave thanks to God with the firm conviction that this help came from Him alone. The recollection of that hour will never leave me. A year has elapsed since, and today my health is as good as ever and I experience no pain of any kind.
My mother, brothers, and sisters were so much impressed by this sudden healing that out of love and gratitude to God they all took up the study of Christian Science, and they have been blessed in various ways thereby. It affords me much joy to be able to say that my two sons, twelve and fourteen years old, evidence great interest in this teaching, and we study the Bible Lessons together daily. The understanding of Christian Science has enabled me to overcome many difficulties which have presented themselves, and words fail to describe the benefits I have received or to express my deep felt thankfulness to God, and next to Him my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, who has again given to the world the pure Christ teaching and showed such faith and courage in her work for the cause of Truth.
