Christian Science came to me at a time when everything seemed dark, and it brought unspeakable joy and hope. I was bitter and despondent, fighting for courage to go on with life. One by one I had lost several who were near and dear to me, besides being in financial straits and very unhappy. Although I had just fitted myself for a profession, I felt little inclination to use it.
I had heard of Christian Science and its wonderful healings, but it was not until all human help had failed that I turned to it for relief. The day that the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was loaned to me, I went away by myself with an almost breathless eagerness, sure that it had the message for which I had been longing all my life. I read for hours with the same intense joy with which a prisoner might read his pardon, for this book explained God in a way that I had always wanted to believe. I continued to read at every spare moment and began to see the way out of all my trouble. My heart warmed with love for every one, and especially for those who I thought had wronged me; in fact, the first thing I did was to write them to this effect.
Some weeks later I lost the use of my voice because of a severe cold. In my work as a teacher of expression this seemed very trying, but I knew that here was a chance to prove the' power of Truth. A physician in the home where I was boarding told me that I would never have the proper use of my voice unless I submitted to an operation; however, I knew that God would heal me. In one treatment from a Christian Science practitioner not only was my voice restored, but it was beautified, and a sense of loss and sorrow vanished which before had seemed unyielding. I shall never forget the peace and assurance that flooded my consciousness when these words were quoted: "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine." I came away absolutely sure that I could not lose anything that would not be replaced by good. I was also healed of chronic bowel difficulty, of severe headache, and other ailments, through the reading of Science and Health.
